Amazon is set to implement significant changes to its Echo devices’ privacy settings, affecting how user voice recordings are processed. Beginning March 28, 2025, the “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” feature will be discontinued, meaning all voice interactions with Alexa will be transmitted to Amazon’s cloud servers for processing.
This change is driven by Amazon’s expansion of Alexa’s capabilities through generative AI features, which require the computational power of Amazon’s secure cloud. The company assures users that these recordings will be deleted after processing.
Previously, the “Do Not Send Voice Recordings” setting allowed certain Echo devices to process voice commands locally, enhancing user privacy. However, with the upcoming changes, all voice data will be processed in the cloud. Users who had this setting enabled will have their devices automatically switched to “Don’t Save Recordings,” ensuring that while voice recordings are sent to the cloud, they won’t be stored after processing.
It’s important to note that this feature was available only to a limited number of users in the U.S. with specific Echo models, such as the Echo Dot (4th Gen), Echo Show 10, and Echo Show 15. According to Amazon, less than 0.03% of customers utilized this setting.
This policy shift has raised concerns among users, particularly regarding privacy and data security. Some users have expressed apprehension about all voice interactions being sent to Amazon’s servers, fearing potential misuse or unauthorized access. Amazon emphasizes its commitment to user privacy, stating that the cloud infrastructure is designed with multiple layers of security to protect customer information.
In light of these changes, users are encouraged to review and adjust their Alexa privacy settings. While the option to prevent voice recordings from being sent to the cloud will no longer be available, users can still manage other privacy controls, such as opting not to save recordings after processing. To modify these settings, users can access the Alexa app or visit Amazon’s Alexa Privacy Settings page.
As Amazon continues to enhance Alexa with advanced AI capabilities, understanding and managing privacy settings becomes increasingly crucial for users. Staying informed about these changes ensures that users can make choices aligned with their privacy preferences while benefiting from the latest technological advancements.
