Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue support for its Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. After this date, the app will no longer be available for download or installation from the Microsoft Store, and connections to services such as Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app will be blocked.
To ensure uninterrupted access to these services, users are advised to transition to the new Windows App, which was launched in September 2024. The Windows App offers several enhancements over the legacy Remote Desktop app, including:
- Unified Access: Provides a centralized interface to access multiple Windows services, including Cloud PCs and virtual desktops.
- Enhanced User Experience: Features customizable home screens, multimonitor support, and dynamic display resolutions.
- Improved Remote Work Features: Supports device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimizations, and facilitates easy account switching.
The transition to the Windows App aligns with Microsoft’s broader strategy to move Windows fully to the cloud, enabling improved AI-powered services and a seamless digital experience across devices.
It’s important to note that the Remote Desktop Connection app, which has been a part of Windows for over two decades, will continue to be available and functional beyond May 27, 2025. This app allows users to connect to remote PCs and will remain a viable option until Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) support is integrated into the Windows App.
To prepare for this transition, users should download and install the Windows App from the Microsoft Store or directly from Microsoft’s official website. IT administrators are encouraged to guide their organizations through this change by updating internal resources, user guidance, and administrative materials as necessary.
