OpenAI is temporarily removing generation limits on its Sora AI video tool for ChatGPT Plus subscribers during the holiday season. CEO Sam Altman announced the promotion on X, citing reduced GPU usage during late December as employees take time off.
The unlimited access applies only to the “relaxed queue,” meaning generations may take longer but will still typically complete within a minute. This offers a significant upgrade from the standard 50 generations per month included in the $20 ChatGPT Plus subscription.
Technical limitations remain unchanged:
- 480p resolution for 10-second clips
- 720p resolution for 5-second videos
- No capability to animate human figures
- Available through the “relaxed queue” only
The promotion provides an alternative to OpenAI’s $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro plan, which normally offers unlimited Sora access. While the holiday promotion’s end date hasn’t been specified, it’s expected to conclude in early January.
OpenAI plans to announce dedicated Sora pricing plans in 2024, potentially including a standalone unlimited subscription separate from ChatGPT Pro. For users seeking alternatives after the promotion ends, Runway offers unlimited generations at $95 monthly, while Haiper provides basic watermarked generations (non-commercial use) for $10 monthly.
Sora, unveiled during OpenAI’s recent “12 Days of OpenAI” event, has maintained its competitive edge in the AI video generation space since its early 2024 launch, particularly notable for its fast generation times.
